Accessibility
Why W3C?
The World Wide Web Consortium's Web Accessibility Initiative creates guidelines that explain how to make web site content accessible to people with disabilities. The primary goal of these guidelines is to promote accessibility. However, following them also makes your web content more available to all users and will also help people find information on the Web more quickly.
Who is affected?
You may be saying to yourself, "But my business doesn't cater to people with disabilities, so why worry about it?"
According to the 1997 Census, approximately 54 million people in the U.S. live with at least one disability. The purchasing power of the disabled community is substantial according to a 1998 report released by the President's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities.
"Consumers with disabilities control more than $175 billion in discretionary income. They, like all consumers, are more likely to patronize businesses where they feel welcome. Accessible web sites, stores, products and services, along with employees with disabilities, will help customers with disabilities feel that their business is appreciated."
